Another Freak Tornado Hits Arkansas, Midwest

After the freak tornados battered the surprising warm Midwest and wrecked numerous houses, another tornado was reported in central Arkansas on Tuesday. The latest twister knocked a railroad locomotive off its tracks and also caused some damages to a courthouse.

A person who was inside the building has reportedly been killed according to Tommy Jackson, a spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Other residents were hurt by the high winds and debris, said Jim Campbell, Assistant Director for Pope County 911.

"We've got some homes damaged, trees and roads and stuff like that," said Campbell for the Associated Press.

The unseasonable tornadoes, which hit at a time when people are more used to snowstorms and frostbite, occurred due to the high winter temperatures across several areas of the country. On Monday, there were reported tornadoes in southwest Missouri, southeastern Wisconsin, Arkansas, Illinois and Oklahoma.

Two people were reportedly killed in Missouri.

The area hit the hardest was a subdivision in Wheatland, located at about 50 miles southwest of Milwaukee. The cyclones wreaked 60 homes there according to Kenosha County sheriff's Lt. Paul Falduto. Fifteen people were hurt in the county, but, fortunately, they all are in secure conditions.

"With the light of day it always looks worse than at night," Falduto said.

A locomotive and twelve of its freight cars were derailed in Harvard, Ill. The powerful winds also wrecked a tank car containing shock absorber fluid which leaked for approximately four hours before the intervention crew managed to contain it. Another derailed car containing ethylene oxide, a flammable material used to sterilize medical supplies, was also heavily hit but did not leak, Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said.

The unusual phenomenon was explained by U.S. meteorologists, who said that the atypical weather was caused by the warm, moist air moving from the south. The temperatures reached 70 degrees on Sunday and Monday.
