Harsh times are ahead for Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend and
he is apparently going all-out to reduce his prison term.
A legal representative for Raffaello Follieri, who pleaded
guilty last month to wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy, asked a judge
on Tuesday to sentence the Italian businessman to three years of imprisonment rather
than the almost five years he took on in his plea deal.
Flora Edwards explained that Raffaello Follieri’s breakdown
was caused by his tendency toward an opulent lifestyle, as the 30-year-old
Italian was surrounded by very important figures in showbiz, including his back
then famous actress girlfriend, Anne Hathaway.
“He was surrounded by movie stars and celebrities and this young
man who neither drinks nor smokes was intoxicated with it all,” Flora Edwards
wrote in the letter she sent to Judge John Koeltl, who is due to sentence
Raffaello Follieri on October 23.
Follieri defrauded investors out of $2.4 million by
overemphasizing the connections he had with Vatican
insiders that allegedly helped him purchase the Roman Catholic Church’s
unnecessary real estate properties at a discount.
Prosecutors said that Follieri used the money he obtained
through his plan to acquire pricey outfits, exotic vacations, as well as to pay
the rent for his Manhattan
apartment, which reached $37,000 a month.
Follieri’s lawyer cited her client’s “deeply religious”
principles and his ailing mother in the memo filed on Tuesday, adding that Follieri’s
would return to Italy
and never “return to this country.”
The Italian entrepreneur and Anne Hathaway had been dating for
four years when they broke up this summer, just before Follieri’s arrest in
June.
