Ups and downs for actress Anne Hathaway. And only
downs for her ex boyfriend Raffaello Follieri who was charged with fraud and
money laundering, after being arrested on Tuesday.
According to the Associated Press, the Italian businessman
was posing as a representative of the Vatican and was claiming he could
obtain properties of the Catholic Church, worth millions of dollars. Follieri
went further and claimed he made visits to the pope, every time he was in Rome.
The truth came out and, while Folierri was planning his
birthday, federal agents “surprised” him by coming to his Trump Tower
apartment and arresting him. Earlier this month he and Hathaway had separated
after about 4 years of relationship. The actress was not being investigated and
was no longer a member of his ex’s foundation.
Prosecutor Reed Michael Brodsky said that Folierri
was fooling investors to give their money. The schemes were discovered when the
principal investor sought an audit of the partnership and wanted explanations
regarding some expenses that had nothing to do with the business itself.
Judge Henry B. Pitman set bail at $21 million. $16 million
can be paid in cash or by liquid assets and properties. Follieri was also asked
to give all his travel documents and was confined to his Manhattan home, being monitored by an
electronic device. He is allowed to leave the house only for legal,
religious and medical needs.
The complaint had evidence that Follieri, the chairman and
chief executive of the Follieri Group, said that the Vatican had appointed him to take
care of its financial affairs. The government said otherwise, adding that Follieri
was simply competing against other bidders.
Follieri came to the U.S. in 2003 and made his way to
the top. He became friends with Douglas Band, a top aide to Bill Clinton and
was introduced to Ron Burkle, the main investors of his foundation.
Burkle’s company Yucaipa
put more than $55 million in the Follieri Group. The company sued Follieri last
year and the lawsuit was settled last month.
Tuesday, after appearing in court, Follieri suffered “an
attack” because of a sinus infection and was taken to a hospital, said his
publicist Melanie Bonvicino, according to The Associated Press.
