Raffaello Follieri, Anne Hathaway's former boyfriend, who was arrested the other day on wire fraud and money laundering charges, was rushed to a hospital after his New York court appearance with a severe sinus infection.
According to People.com, the Italian businessman presented symptoms during the hearing which led to him being taken to a hospital for a close examination, his rep, Melanie A. Bonvicino said.
"I do not have the specifics on what type of treatment at this time but [it's] for a severe sinus infection," Bonvicino added, explaining that the 29-year-old is in stable condition.
At the time of his arrest, Tuesday morning, Follieri, who dated Hathaway for four years before she finally decided to break up with him in the wake of his recent trouble with the law, had tested positive for opiates from a urine sample.
However, Follieri has had "a sinus infection for the past three weeks. In the courtroom they said that he had tested positive for opiates, and it's not the case. He was on a prescription and cough medicine from his doctors that contained codeine before retiring to bed that night. Therefore that is what his doctors told me caused his urine test to be positive."
Follieri secretly siphoned millions from his real- estate-investment fund to pay for a lavish lifestyle, the prosecutors said. His loot allegedly helped him jet around the world with Hathaway, and even pay her medical bills, New York Post reported.
Apparently, he lied to investors that he was the Vatican's chief financial officer and had the ear of Pope Benedict XVI.
"[Follieri] is a con man. He was able to con a lot of people out of a lot of money and did it over a long period of time," said prosecutor Reed Brodsky during the hearing in which he was ordered held in lieu of a staggering $21 million bail.
"He was able to deceive everyone from the most sophisticated investor to the naive person," he added. "The evidence in this case is overwhelming."
Follieri was under investigation by the New York State Attorney General's office for failing to file tax-disclosure forms for his charity, the Follieri Foundation. He was also arrested in April for allegedly writing a $215,000 bad check.
Hathaway, whose latest film "Get Smart" debuted at #1 at the box office last weekend, has not been implicated in the charges against her ex-boyfriend. She also quit being a board member of his foundation.
