The "Princess Diaries" and "Devil Wears Prada" star Anne Hathaway opened up about the shock she went through when she found out that her Italian boyfriend was charged with fraud and money laundering.
The actress described what she went through in an interview in the October edition of W magazine. The 25-year-old actress said she felt like "a rug was pulled out from under me" when her ragazzo, Raffaello Follieri, was arrested in June.
Hathaway gave details about the period after the bad news about her boyfriend. The young actress spent a week in shock at a friend’s house between press tours. However, she didn’t give details about her boyfriend or if she had suspected that something was wrong with the Italian’s way of making business. She did say that she moved in at a friend’s house and stayed there since the $37,000-a-month Manhattan apartment in which she was living with her boyfriend was searched by police investigators.
"I have to find a place to live," she was quoted as saying. "It's a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden, but just as suddenly my friends threw another rug back under me."
Her boyfriend pleaded guilty on Wednesday and acknowledged that he had lied about his links with the Vatican. Raffaello Follieri gathered more than $2 million through fraud. In October he could be sentenced to years in prison.
"I've been shown such kindness. Not everyone gets that. A lot of people go through tough times alone," said Hathaway of the way her Italian lover treated her.
