Anne Hathaway Enters Wonderland

The cast of Tim Burton’s next movie, “Alice in Wonderland,” is gaining shape and consistency, with Anne Hathaway having signed to portray the White Queen.

We are in for another treat from quirky director Tim Burton, who has already regaled us with such gems as “Edward Scissorhands,” “Corpse Bride” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Lewis Carroll’s excellent children’s book “Alice in Wonderland” will benefit from Burton’s magic touch as he makes an adaptation combining live action and performance-capture technology for Walt Disney Pictures. The film is scheduled for a 2010 release.

Longtime collaborator and friend Johnny Depp is already on board, set to portray the Mad Hatter, while longtime collaborator and girlfriend Helena Bonham Carter will play the Red Queen, the one with the scary habit of screaming from the top of her lungs, “Off with their heads!”

Anne Hathaway will play the White Queen, sister to the Red Queen and ally to Alice.

The lovely Alice is to be portrayed by Mia Wasikowska, an 18-year-old Australian actress who has appeared in HBO’s series “In Treatment.”

Depp and Carter both starred in last year’s “Sweeney Todd,” alongside Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen and earned rave reviews from film critics.

Anne Hathaway currently appears in “Rachel Getting Married,” a drama which opened in limited release last weekend to great critical reviews. She portrays a recovering drug addict who disrupts her sister’s wedding.

Moviegoers could also see Hathaway in “Get Smart” earlier this summer, where she portrayed the efficient Agent 99 opposite Steve Carell’s Maxwell Smart. She next appears in “Passengers,” a drama to be released this month, opposite Patrick Wilson and Clea DuVall.

Hathaway first gained attention with a starring role in the short-lived Fox drama “Get Real” and became a household name after starring in the Disney movies “The Princess Diaries.” Full recognition of her talent came with “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”
