Animated "Star Wars" at a Theater Near You Aug. 15!

“Star Wars: The Clone Wars” will be unfolding in theaters Aug. 15 and this time around the “Star Wars” offering is completely animated and will be followed by a TV series of the same name this fall.

The computer-animated feature film will feature cartoon versions of familiar characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme Amidala and General Grievous as well as a new character named Ahsoka, Anakin's padawan, the first female Jedi to be a character of focus.

The Aug. 15 release will be followed in the fall by a television series with the same name and animation style that will air weekly on the Cartoon Network and TNT, it was announced Tuesday.

Both projects are produced by creator George Lucas’ Lucasfilm Animation and both will be distributed through Time Warner Inc., the owner of TNT, the Cartoon Network and of the film's distributor, Warner Bros.

“I felt there were a lot more ‘Star Wars’ stories left to tell,” George Lucas said in a statement. “I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the animation forward.”

Lucasfilm Animation began work on the project last year and Lucas does not intend to stop here. He has also been working on a new live-action television series spin-off that will bring the film franchise’s more minor characters to the small screen.

Last fall, the director teasingly told the Los Angeles Times that the live-action series would be about “the life of robots” and declined to offer further details.

As for the animated series to come, Dave Filoni, director of the “Clone Wars” movie and supervising director of the series, revealed that there would be about 30 episodes but he did not say how long the show would last.

“Clone Wars” and its accompanying series will fit in between the events of 2002’s “Attack of the Clones” and those of 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.”

Lucas aficionados have even more to look forward this summer, as the fourth installment of the “Indiana Jones” franchise, the much-anticipated “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” will be released.

The film will reunite Hollywood veteran Harrison Ford with Karen Allen, the actress that portrayed Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s love interest and ally, in 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent are also part of the cast. Lucas is executive producer and co-screenwriter, while Steven Spielberg took on directorial duties.

The film is scheduled for a worldwide release on May 22.
