“Angel at the Fence,” a Romantic Story During the Holocaust, Cancelled

On Saturday, Berkley Books canceled Rosenblat's memoir, "Angel at the Fence" as Rosenblat acknowledged that he and his wife did not meet, as they had said for years, at a sub-camp of Buchenwald, where she allegedly sneaked him apples and bread. The book was supposed to come out in February.

Rosenblat said they found each other years later, set up on a blind date. “I wanted to bring happiness to people,” Rosenblat said in a statement issued Saturday through his agent, Andrea Hurst. “I brought hope to a lot of people. My motivation was to make good in this world.”

The Associated Press reported that this story had even caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey. She stated that their romance was “the single greatest love story . . . we’ve ever told on the air.” This story had inspired a children’s book and even a feature film that will be in production next year.

But in a recent article in The New Republic, several scholars challenged details of the story, noting among other things that the camp’s layout would have made exchanges at the fence impossible. In a statement reported by The Associated Press, Mr. Rosenblat said: “I was a young child at the time my family was caught up in the Holocaust, and I saw things through a young child’s eyes. But I know and remember what I saw.”

Rosenblat has to give all the money back, and the movie will no longer be made. He's been on Oprah twice, but there’s no word yet on whether she will invite him back on the show for the express purpose of debating the situation.
