Some of the best snowboarders
gathered at this year’s finals for the Swatch TTR SIX(6)STAR O’Neill Evolution
Halfpipe competition held in Davos, Switzerland, and Andy Finch could make no
exception. The U.S. snowboarder had a few tricks up his sleeve and took the
competition by storm, finishing first on Friday and moving into the number 1
position in the Swatch TTR rankings, twenty point ahead of Torstein Horgmo of
Norway.
It seemed like everyone was on
the verge of breaking new records and new heights, in a competition that could
only be described in one word: Wow! Nicholas Mueller (SUI), Colin Frei (SUI),
Manuel Pietropoli (ITA) and Andy Finch (USA) took snowboarding to a whole new level
that seemed impossible just a few years ago.
“Today everyone was pushing it.
The level of riding was so high," Mattila said to the reporters. "It
was a contest for amplitude: That was the name of the game. Man, it was a fun a
competition. I was fourth place until my last run, but I was able to stick my
trick for second. I’m so stoked.” Matilla managed one of the biggest McTwists
in the history of this sport, which brought him the second spot in the event
and moved him to the 6th place overall in the TTR.
The competitors are pushing
their limits with every event, and the TTR ranking is hardly the same following
each competition. Chas Guldemond (USA) remained World No. 4, while his fellow
American Tim Humphreys is now World No. 11. The double champion Mathieu Crepel
(FRA)still remains in the top 20, at No. 19, and the fight for the best ranking
goes on.
The snowboarders are now
preparing for the Burton European Open that is to be held in Laax, Switzerland,
in which both men and women riders are expected to show up and make the most
out of this competition.
