The Oscar telecast used to be the only place you could see a movie star on TV - for free.
The ceremony is still one of the top entertainment special events of the year, but last year's viewership of 32 million was the lowest in modern history. Perhaps it was because people now have the possibility to spin through 100 cable channels almost any time of day and see a star on a talk show, a news program or something.
"Slumdog Millionaire" has been voted as the number one film people would most like to win the Best Picture trophy at the 81st Academy awards this Sunday. The movie tells the story of a Mumbai young and poor man who participates to the Hindi version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” in order to get rich and impress the girl he was in love with. “Slumdog” has already won many awards worldwide including seven Baftas and four Golden Globes and is the favorite to claim the top prize at this year's Academy awards.
More than a half of the voters have stood up for “Slumdog,” while "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" came on the second place with 22 per cent votes.
British director Danny Boyle was chosen favorite to win the trophy in the Best Director category by 59 per cent of the voters.
If "Slumdog Millionaire" wins the Best Picture Oscar, it would be the first British film to do so since "Chariots of Fire" in 1981.
