The husband of British singer Amy Winehouse has been ordered by a judge to remain in police custody until Nov. 23 over charges of assaulting a bartender earlier this year and allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she married some six months ago during a private ceremony in Miami, have had their fair share of tabloid exposure: alleged fights, substance use and abuse, arrest over possession of marijuana etc. The couple managed to add to the very long list of tabloid fodder when Blake was arrested last week as part of an ongoing investigation in the attack of a barman.
Blake was apparently involved in a “brutal attack” in June, according to British paper The Daily Mail, when he and another man allegedly assaulted a barman at a pub in London. The injured man allegedly required metal plates fitted in his face after the attack, the paper reports.
The case was to go on trial this week, when new information surfaced. Two men approached the Daily Mirror, claiming they possessed video of the attack as well as of an attempt to get one of the witnesses to the assault to change his evidence, by offering him money.
Police subsequently arrested the two men, Blake and a fourth man on Thursday, reports the Daily Mail. They were questioned in connection with allegedly attempting to pervert justice in relation to the upcoming trial.
Blake and another man are charged with grievous bodily harm for the alleged attack on the barman and with attempting to pervert justice. If convicted, Amy Winehouse’s 25-year-old husband faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. A spokesman for the British singer has already stated that she knew nothing of the situation.
Blake has been ordered to remain in police custody until Nov. 23.
Amy Winehouse made numerous headlines over the summer, with her erratic behavior, checking into rehab and cancelling scheduled performances in the United States, Canada and the UK. There has been much talk about drug use, health problems (she has appeared numerous times in public looking very thin and pale) and marital turmoil (a couple of months ago Amy and Blake were photographed by the paparazzi bearing scratches, bruises and blood stains after an alleged brawl).
Last month, the two were arrested in Norway and fined $715 for possession of marijuana.
