In the wake of the recently leaked video allegedly showing her on a 19-minute drug binge, troubled British singer Amy Winehouse has checked into rehab. How long will she last there though?
This is not the first time the 24-year-old Amy Winehouse is reported to check into rehab to receive professional help for her substance abuse problem; on previous attempts though she never seemed to last long in the facility and photographs would soon surface showing her go to some local pub with her husband.
Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she married in May in Miami, Florida, is currently behind bars on charges of perverting the course of justice and assault in relation with an incident in a pub last year.
Winehouse has been taking the separation badly, showing an increasing number of signs of poor health over the past months: pallor, extreme thinness, wondering on the streets barefoot and looking confused, appearing disoriented and unable to stand on her feet on several occasions etc. Fielder-Civil, 25, was taken in police custody in November.
Earlier this week, British tabloid The Sun published photo stills from a video it obtained, allegedly showing Winehouse indulge in a 19-minute drug binge. Should the footage prove authentic, at the time the video was made (last Friday), the 24-year-old had taken six pills of Valium, ecstasy and cocaine.
The Sun sent the video to Scotland Yard, who said Wednesday it would look into the situation.
This latest scandal apparently prompted the singer to seek help once more. She entered a rehabilitation clinic Thursday, “after talks with her record label, management, family and doctors,” her record label Universal Music Group said in a written statement, CNN reports.
“She has come to understand that she requires specialist treatment to continue her ongoing recovery from drug addiction and prepare for her planned appearance at the Grammy Awards,” the statement read. “Amy entered the facility by mutual agreement and continues to receive the full support of all concerned.”
She will no longer be able to attend an awards show in France this weekend due this latest development, the statement added.
It remains to be seen whether the troubled singer will be able to participate at the Grammy awards show in early February. She has received six nominations, including record and song of the year for “Rehab” and best album for “Back to Black.” U. S. authorities could deny Winehouse the visa she needs to cross the Ocean.
She is also due back in court in Bergen, Norway on Feb. 29 to appeal against a fine for possessing cannabis. While touring Europe in October, Winehouse and her husband were arrested at a Norwegian hotel for cannabis possession and spent the night in jail.
They were released the following day after paying a fine but both said later they had not been aware that under Norwegian law, paying the fine is equivalent to pleading guilty. The singer expressed fears that this incident could prevent her from working in the U. S.
Perhaps this time around she stays in rehab long enough to get rid of her drug addiction. Her record label says it is ready to wait for her to get better: “Amy is the most talented and important musical artist of her generation and has made huge strides on her road to recovery,” its statement said Thursday.
“Universal Music Group wants nothing more than to see her take the time she needs to come back to full health and fulfill her incredible potential with the label.”
This is the consensus among family, friends and fans as well.
