Although British singer Amy Winehouse was eventually granted her U.S. visa for Sunday’s Grammy Awards, she won’t be attending the event due to "tight timing."
The decision followed the appeal made by the singer after having her initial visa request was turned down, because of a drug conviction in Norway last October. However, the songbird’s plans to perform live at the ceremony via satellite from London remained unaltered by the latest turn of events.
"Unfortunately, due to the logistics involved and timing complications, Amy will not be coming to the U.S. this weekend to perform at the Grammys in Los Angeles, however she will still be performing via satellite broadcast from London as previously announced this morning," her U.S. rep was quoted by People as saying.
Winehouse, who has been in rehab for the past two weeks, will be taking a break from the clinic to prepare her performance, but will remain under medical supervision. She will also record an acceptance speech in case she wins any of the six awards she is nominated for.
"Amy would like to thank all of those people, and in particular the staff involved at the U.S. Embassy in London, who have all worked so hard to expedite her application. She is very sad not to be attending the prestigious awards in person, but wishes to express her heartfelt gratitude to all of those involved in the process," the statement added.
Although she is said to be disappointed she won’t make it to the Grammys, Winehouse said she is "excited to be performing at my first Grammy Awards," and will try to focus on her recovery.
"She is feeling great, looking healthy and looking forward to doing what she does best. She will remain under full medical supervision and her treatment will continue as normal," her rep told the media.
Winehouse was a six-time nominee of the Grammy’s, being shortlisted for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Female Performance for "Rehab," Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Vocal Album for "Back to Black."
