In an interview for the British newspaper Daily
Mail, Mitch Winehouse said that his daughter, Amy Winehouse, has serious
lung problems.
Amy Winehouse, who was taken to the hospital last Monday,
after she briefly fainted underwent several tests this week, but the doctors did
not reveal any information about her health status.
However, there were rumors in the British media, according
to which the doctors warned Amy Winehouse that her drug addiction could be
fatal.
Mitch Winehouse, who took her to the private London hospital The
Clinic, said today that the doctors said Amy Winhouse has early stage emphysema.
Emphysema is a progressive lung disease that results in
shortness of breath and reduces the capacity for physical activity. The cause
of emphysema is damage to the small air sacs and small airways in the lungs.
This damage obstructs airflow when one exhales.
The doctors said Amy Winehouse could be confined to a
wheelchair within a month if she doesn’t quit drugs. Also, they warned she may
be forced to wear a permanent oxygen mask to survive if she doesn’t follow
medical advice.
“But the doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking
drugs it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her”, Mitch Winehouse said.
In an emotional appeal, Mitch Winehouse begged her drug dealers
to stay away from his daughter.
“I'm saying to those drug dealers, and they know who they
are, if they are supplying crack to Amy, then they've got to take
responsibility,” he said. He also spoke about Pete Doherty, the leading singer
of the British group Babyshambles, who is known for his drug addiction,
“I don't want her hanging out with her mates like Pete
Doherty either,” Mitch Winehouse said.
Due to her health problems, Amy Winehouse will probably miss
her scheduled performances at Nelson Mandela’s birthday concert on June 27 and at
Glastonbury
festival on June 28.
Earlier this week, Amy Winehouse spokesperson said that a
decision about her future performances will be taken and the doctors will announce
the results of the tests.
However, her father said Amy Winehouse is ready to kick her
bad habits and turn her life around.
Last year, the British singer was admitted to a hospital in London suffering from
"severe exhaustion". Earlier this year, the singer checked herself
into a rehabilitation clinic, after a video showing her taking drugs emerged in
the media.
