Amy Winehouse Arrested for Possession of Marijuana

British singer Amy Winehouse was arrested in Norway for possession of cannabis on Thursday night and was released Friday morning after paying a fine.

BBC News reports that troubled singer Amy Winehouse, 23, and husband Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested Thursday in Bergen, Norway after being found with seven grams of cannabis. They spent the night in jail and were released Friday morning after paying a 500 euro fine each (£350; $714), according to a prosecutor.

The couple was arrested at the Radisson SAS Hotel Norge Bergen, the Daily Mail reports, after hotel staff alerted police that marijuana smoke was emanating form their room. Hotel guests had complained of the smell.

Amy and Blake were reportedly taken to the police station, questioned and locked in separate cells.

The Daily Mail quotes a spokesperson for the Bergen police: “She is no longer at the station. We released her after questioning her yesterday night. We found a small quantity of marijuana in her room. A small team of local officers were involved. Both individuals were very co-operative.”

The singer has cancelled a scheduled concert at the Peer Gynt for Friday night due to her arrest.

She began her tour only days ago in Berlin, after canceling a string of concerts across Europe and America earlier this year. There has been a steady flow of reports on her supposed drug addiction and successive checking in and out of rehab facilities.

In February this year, Amy Winehouse won a Brit award for best British female artist. Last month, she won two prizes at the Music of Black Origin (Mobo) awards in London.

Her debut album “Frank” was released in 2003 and received positive reviews. Her debut single “Stronger than Me” earned her the Ivor Novello Award in 2004. She won the prestigious award again for the first single “Rehab” from her critically acclaimed 2006 album “Back to Black.”

The Daily Mail reports that Bergen police confirmed the case involved no violence and no harder drugs were found in the couple’s hotel room.
