Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys Vie for Mercury Prize

The contenders for this year’s Mercury Music Prizes have been announced and among them are last year’s winning group Arctic Monkeys and previously nominated songstress Amy Winehouse.

The Mercury Music Prize is given each year, since 1992, to the best British or Irish album of the previous 12 months. The winner receives much greater exposure and album sales have been found to rise considerably following such a nomination.

Among this year’s nominees is also Dizzee Rascal, 2003’s winner with the album “Boy In Da Corner.” Arctic Monkeys won last year with their debut album, “Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.”

Amy Winehouse, as famous for her resonant voice as for her drinking and partying, had her debut album “Frank” nominated in 2004, but lost then-newcomers Franz Ferdinand.

Previous winners of the Mercury Music Prize are PJ Harvey, Pulp, Suede and Ms. Dynamite. Nominees in past years have been U2, Coldplay, David Bowie, Radiohead, Gorillaz and Chemical Brothers, among others.

This year’s nominees are:

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford - Basquiat Strings

Bat For Lashes - Fur and Gold

Dizzee Rascal - Maths and English

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future

Maps - We Can Create

New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom

Fionn Regan - The End of History

Jamie T - Panic Prevention

The View - Hats Off to the Buskers

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black

The Young Knives - Voices of Animals and Men

The winner will be announced during an awards ceremony on September 4.
