NBC confirmed today that Amy Poehler will star on a new NBC
comedy series from the creators of the network’s popular satire “The Office.”
Poehler will leave “Saturday Night Live” to join the new
sitcom from Greg Daniels and Mike Schur. Still, she said she planned to stay at
SNL through the election this fall. She recently finished her seventh season on
the show and earned an Emmy nomination last week as best supporting actress for
her work as a sketch comedy artist.
The show was first supposed to be a spinoff of “The Office,”
but network executives said the show would eventually be built as an
independent piece. They declined to give further details on the series’ plot at
a gathering of TV critics on Monday, but admitted that the two shows would have
a similar tone and style, Reuters reports. Which is quite obvious, with them
having the same executive producers.
“This show suddenly got a hundred percent easier,” Daniels
said in a statement. "Amy shines in everything she does. She can make even
bad material funny, and I know we can write bad material.”
The show was initially rumored to debut after the Super Bowl
in February, but it seems it will not be ready to air by then. It is more
likely to be ready in spring.
Meantime, Poehler is preparing to give birth to her first
baby in the fall.
