Amy Poehler Leaving NBC's Saturday Night Live, Having Baby

This is the seventh and apparently last year for Amy Poehler on “Saturday Night Live,” as the comedienne apparently plans to focus on maternity and acting.

The Dish Rag is reporting that Amy Poehler intends to take a break from NBC show “Saturday Night Live” after the November election as she is expecting her first child.

Poehler, who is married to “Arrested Development” actor Will Arnett, confesses in an interview for Men’s Vogue, the new issue, that her departure will be heartbreaking.

“It’s gonna be really hard - Boyz II Men hard - to say goodbye to yesterday,” Poehler humorously says. “‘SNL’ was dangerous, late-night, last-minute and star-studded, but like any good drug, you need to know when to put it down.”

The mom-to-be will therefore take her leave of absence – indefinitely. Once her baby is born, Poehler makes no promise to return to “SNL.” Instead, she will star in her own NBC series, as of now a mysterious project from the producers of “The Office.”

While originally thought to be a spin-off of “The Office,” the show will actually be a brand new project. Aziz Ansari also stars; “The Office” writers-executive producers Greg Daniels and Mike Schur are likewise on board.

Poehler has been a regular cast member of “SNL” since 2001; in 2004 she started presenting the parodic “Weekend Update” with Tina Fey, replacing Jimmy Fallon and when Fey left a year later, she co-anchored with Seth Meyers.

Fey made a comeback this weekend, for the show’s season premiere, portraying Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, while Poehler portrayed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the opening skit.

The premiere was a great success, marking the show’s most watched episode since 2002, when Al Gore hosted.

Poehler and Fey have taken their collaboration beyond “SNL,” starring this summer in the Universal Pictures comedy “Baby Mama.”

Poehler currently lends her voice to the lead animated character Bessie Higgenbottom of Nickelodeon series “The Mighty B.” She is co-creator of the show along with Cynthia True and Erik Wiese.
