Americans showed an incredible interest in the Emergency
Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, which got rejected by the House of
Representatives on Monday. As a proof of that, the House’s website was overwhelmed
with visitors trying to access the Write Your Representative feature, which
resulted in an enormous pressure on the system, at least four times the average
traffic.
“The House of Representatives is currently experiencing an
extraordinary high amount of email traffic,” the website wrote. “The Write Your
Representative function is there intermittently available. While we realize
communicating to your Members of Congress is critical, we suggest attempting to
do so at a later time, when demand is not so high.”
According to Jeff Ventura, spokesman for the House of
Representatives, the high traffic resulted in slow access to the site, or no
access at all. The problem was that users were under time pressure to see the
bill, and therefore, the House website had problems starting Sunday, even
before the bill got rejected; the problem continued through Tuesday morning.
In addition to facing incredible traffic, Ventura also said
they’ve received millions of e-mails, which was pretty staggering. The advice
for people trying to send an e-mail to congressmen is try to be patient, as
they may receive “try again later” responses. The problem might continue for
the next days as well, Ventura said, despite the fact that the traffic decreased
after the bill got rejected.
The website of the House of Representatives was not the only
one assaulted by users, Ventura said. Congress websites, and websites of House Committees have been overwhelmed, as well as websites offering links to the bill.
