Americans Don’t Exercise Enough

One of the biggest health risks that the United States face at the moment is obesity. In a recent study that assessed the health of Americans on a state-by-state basis, rates have significantly raised when it comes to prevalence for obesity, especially in the Southern states such as Texas or Louisiana, who were ranked the two unhealthiest states. Obesity in Americans has many causes, except for the obvious genetic predisposition to gaining weight or other health issues such as thyroid problems. Bombarded with ads, people are pushed to buying unhealthy products, mostly junk food and fast food, or genetically modified products. Natural products are 2-3 times more expensive than regular ones, not to mention the so-called “bio” products, which can reach 5 times the price of regular products. A very full life and a cramped work schedule prevent Americans from getting the minimal necessary exercise routine daily.

According to the most recent statistics, it seems that a worrisome and increasing number of Americans are failing to meet the minimum exercise recommendations. However, exercise guidelines are quite confusing, which makes it very had for the Government to correctly assess the health state of the country. The United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that depending on which federal recommendations on exercises are used, either half or two thirds of all Americans meet the minimum exercise requirements. It is obvious, as the CDC themselves state, that “Additional efforts are needed to further increase physical activity,” as “Approximately one third of U.S. adults did not report meeting minimum levels of aerobic physical activity as defined by the 2008 Guidelines.”
