MTV cleverly picked up the executive producers of Disney’s
“High School Musical” phenomenon to create an edgier version of the teenage
musical, this time set in a mall and starring a modern Cinderella, a modern
evil witch and of course, a modern Prince Charming, in “The American Mall.”
The Cinderella of this story is the pretty and brunette
teenage Ally (Nina Dobrev, “Degrassi: The Next Generation”), an aspiring singer/songwriter
who works in her mother’s music store at the mall. Ally dreams of attending New
England Conservatory, but mom (Yassmin Alers), a failed singer, wants comfort
and safety for her daughter, best embodied by a business degree.
Ally falls in love with an equally cute boy, mall custodian
Joey (Rob Mayes), who is also a struggling musician. He and his band mates, now
fellow janitors, had their equipment stolen before a gig and they are currently
trying to raise money and replace their stuff.
The infatuation is mutual, as Joey also likes Ally and
appreciates her musical endeavors.
Enter the evil witch, portrayed by rich mean girl Madison
(Autumn Reeser, “The O.C.”), whose father owns the mall and whom she hopes to
one day become heiress to.
Autumn is evidently a spoiled brat and what she wants, she
gets. What she decides she wants this time is to have Ally’s mother evicted so
she can have space for her own boutique; she also wants Joey, and what better
way to get him than by tempting him with equipment and ensuing fame and fortune?
Predictably enough, the boy is left to choose between the two loves of his
life: Ally and music. Predictably and pleasantly cheesy enough, the story has a
happy end.
“The American Mall” comes to our TV screen via executive
producers Bill Bordon and Barry Rosenbush, who had overwhelming success with
the “High School Musical” franchise. Shawn Ku directed, while Mr. Ku and Bonnie
Story took care of choreography. The musical premieres Monday night.
