Disney Parks and Resorts are set to create a new attraction for wannabe pop stars based on the "American Idol" phenomenon at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, according to a joint announcement made by Jay Rasulo, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts; Simon Fuller, CEO of 19 Entertainment; and Keith Hindle, executive vice president of FremantleMedia Licensing.
The "Idol" attraction, which is expected to open later this year, will be a high-energy Disney show allowing singers to experience the excitement of auditioning on stage in front of judges.
"Our goal is to try to recreate the excitement of those 24 people who show up on that 'American Idol' stage," Rasulo told The Associated Press. "We believe many, many viewers want to know exactly how that feels, and we're going to try to reproduce that feeling for them."
"Millions of people have imagined themselves standing on the ‘American Idol’ stage," Rasulo said. "We’re excited that we will be bringing this dream to life every day at Walt Disney World."
Guests are set to perform in front of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios producer, and those who pass the test will be selected to appear in one of the park’s “Idol” stage shows, while the "contestants" with the highest votes will be competing in an end-of-day grand finale show at Walt Disney World.
"One of the most remarkable elements about ‘American Idol’ is that for a brief moment each week, we can provide TV viewers the opportunity to imagine life as America’s next superstar. Disney’s new attraction perfectly captures what we at ‘American Idol’ feel is the heart and soul of this brand, real people getting a shot to make their dream a reality," Fuller added.
All singers who pass the screening test will prepare themselves with a vocal coach and a hair and make-up artist before going out on stage.
"This partnership brings the number one show on television, watched in over 100 countries, to the number one theme park destination in the world," Hindle said. "It is a perfect combination and opportunity to offer everyone a taste of the 'American Idol' experience."
