The recent revelation that “American Idol” contestant David Hernandez used to work as an adult entertainer in a Phoenix strip club will not jeopardize his spot on the reality contest, the show’s producers say.
“American Idol” semifinalist David Fernandez will remain on the show despite recent reports that he used to work as an adult entertainer at a male strip club in Phoenix. The 24-year-old, a Glendale, Ariz. native, will have the same chances as the other semifinalists, the show’s producers were quoted as saying by TVGuide.com on Tuesday.
“We've had strippers on the show before,” executive producer Ken Warwick told TVGuide.com. “We're never judgmental about people who do things like that. If it were some sort of heavy porn, then maybe we’d have to take action. But certainly not on this.”
The Fox network declined to comment on the matter. It appears that Hernandez will remain on the show depending on fan voting of his singing performances.
The eight male contestants on the seventh season of “American Idol” performed Tuesday night; on Thursday’s results show, only six of them will be allowed to continue.
This is not the first time when the show’s producers are faced with a contestant’s scandalous past.
In 2003, contestant Frenchie Davis was disqualified after it was discovered that she had posed nude on a pornographic website. Her dismissal was considered necessary because the website in question reportedly featured nude photos of underage girls.
That same season, contestant Corey Clark was also disqualified after producers found he had kept his arrest record a secret. Last year, contestant Antonella Barba was the center of a scandal when racy photos of her wound up on the Internet. She was not dismissed from the reality show but she was voted out by fans.
