American Airlines has some bad news for its clients.
Because of the oil prices that are getting higher, the
nation’s largest air carrier found it necessary to introduce a new fee.
According to the Los Angeles Times, passengers will have to
pay, from June 15, $15 for their first checked bag. About two weeks ago American
Airline put another fee of $25 for a second bag.
Normally, these services would come for free but airlines
find themselves more and more conditioned by the oil prices and national
economy. For example, headsets, exit-row seating, food and baggage used to cost
nothing or they were included in the price of the ticket, but now clients have
to pay for it, in addition to the ticket.
According to San Jose Mercury News, JetBlue plans to charge
for pillows also.
On the other hand, airlines take a defense line saying that,
given the fact that these fees are not included in the ticket price, clients
can decide on their own if they are willing to pay for a certain facility.
The bad news doesn’t stop here, as American Airline also
announced that it would have to let go to some workers and retire 40 to 45
airplanes. The company also plans to cut flights by 11 percent.
If we take a look at the situation, American had a $328
million first-quarter loss last month.
Chief executive of American parent AMR Gerard Arpey said in
a statement that, given the conditions, the company has to take some actions.
The airline “cannot afford to sit by hoping for industry and
market conditions to improve,” said Arpey, according to San Jose Mercury News.
