Amazon.com To The Rescue! $50 Credit For HD DVD Purchases

Are you the proud owner of the late HD DVD player? Then it’s your lucky day, as Amazon joined Best Buy and Wal-Mart in the “It’s OK, we’ll give you $50 back” campaign meant to ease the pain of customers who purchased players before February 23, 2008, when Toshiba made the official announcement it was giving up the fight.

In an e-mail sent to Amazon customers and posted by Gizmodo, the company said that (obviously) new technologies don’t always work out as planned, and that is why they wanted to help the customers who’ve purchased HD DVD players ”by offering them a credit good for $50 off any products sold by Amazon.com.”

Just last month, Best Buy and Circuit City announced programs to appease customers who bought HD DVD hardware by handing out gift cards or store credit. Furthermore, Best-Buy began mailing $50 gift cards to all customers it could identify through store records.

At the same time, Circuit City, which announced first such a program at the beginning of March, said that it will accept returns of HD DVD players within 90 days of purchase in exchange for store credit. Wal-Mart recently announced it was extending its 90-days return program to 6 months.

Amazon said nothing about taking any returns, so that is probably not to be expected in the future either. Although $50 may not seem much, Amazon tries to appeal to its customers by showing support for those who purchased a product that days later got kicked off the market.

And another thing Amazon did, according to the above mentioned e-mail: “We’d like to share some of our top offers on Blu-ray discs, HDTVs and other high-definition technology,” so if you’re unhappy with your HD DVD player, you can always forget about it and but a brand new Blu-ray (don’t forget about the gift card!).
