After announcing earlier in January that Amazon customers will be able to purchase, rent and watch video movies from the Video On Demand service through Roku, the company today confirmed the availability of the service.
Customers will get to choose from a library of more than 40,000 titles, and they will be able to purchase or rent titles as soon as they appear on DVD.
“The launch of Amazon Video On Demand on Roku demonstrates our commitment to creating an open platform that instantly delivers the entertainment consumers want directly to their TVs,” said Anthony Wood, Roku CEO and founder.
Before this, the Roku player only supported the Netflix service, however now, for just $99 (the Roku player is subscription free), customers can access the Amazon library to purchase or re-watch titles any time.
“We are excited to give our customers access to Amazon’s massive catalogue of top movies and TV shows – including many new releases,” Wood also added.
All customers need to do is connect their Roku player to their TV and broadband Internet connection, register their Roku player and start browsing Amazon Video On Demand for the desired titles.
According to Roku’s announcements, over the next couple of weeks, customers will receive free and automatic software updates giving them access to the Amazon Video on Demand service.
Amazon offers high-quality video through the use of its h.264 codec and automatic bandwidth detection, which allows seamless play back of files at 300, 600, 900 or 1200 kbps.
