It is clear that the iPhone created hype when it was released, but what about the iPod Touch? Well, if one takes a look at the sales figures on Amazon or even at the ever increasing number of the applications downloaded through AppStore, one will see that it was the entire iPhone OS platform which was a great hit this year, not the iPhone itself.

Nevertheless, the iPod Touch had its best during this year’s holiday season. If you look at the bestselling devices in the MP3 player category, the iPod Touch is the clear winner, with its 8GB and 16GB version leading the top by far.

However, it is much more interesting that the Touch is the 3^rd and 4^th bestselling product in the whole Electronics category, topped only by a Canon digital camera and by Amazon Kindle. Following the iPod Touch in its two iterations, other versions of the iPod dominated much of the top 17 and let nobody even get close to Apple’s portable devices in terms of units sold.

The fact that some applications, such as iFart Mobile, almost doubled their download hits during holidays may not seem a good indicator of iPod’s success. However, one should bear in mind that Apple itself have recently started to market the MP3 player as the ultimate portable gaming device. This thing alone made many game and application developers eager to invest in the iPhone OS, primarily for the iPod Touch.

As Apple’s mobile platform has lately gained much in popularity, we should see some appealing new apps for the iPhone and the iPod Touch next January, at MacWorld 2009.
