The DreamWorks Animation movie, "Kung Fu Panda" dominated the Annie awards ceremony, held at UCLA's Royce Hall in Westwood on Friday by winning 10 categories, including best animated feature. The ceremony was presented by ASIFA-Hollywood, the Los Angeles chapter of the International Animated Film Society.
Film critics ranked "Wall-E" as one of the top-rated movies of the year but members of the International Animated Film Society, who bestow the Annie Awards, were not so impressed by it. This year's three most important Oscar contenders included "Kung Fu Panda" with 16 nominations, followed by “Wall-E” with 8 and “Bolt” with 5. The first of them, not only did it win the 10 categories for which it was nominated, but also received an award for the offshoots from the making of the movie.
Winning the top prize over many other nominees among which "WALL-E" and "Waltz With Bashir," "Panda" overcame in the received number of awards Pixar's "Ratatouille" which last year earned nine Annies, including best feature.
Kung Fu Panda managed to remain in the center of attention throughout the entire evening. The awards parade included a directing award for John Stevenson and Mark Osborne as well as writing honors for Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Le-Ming Lawrence Lee was responsible therefore awarded for the animated effects and the award for character animation went to James Baxter. The storyboarding was represented by Jen Yuh Nelson. Dustin Hoffman, who plays the Kung Fu master Shifu in the movie, earned the award for voice acting in a feature film.
