Al Green to Receive Lifetime BET Award

Come June 24, soul legend Al Green will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Black Entertainment TV Hip-Hop Awards which are to take place in Los Angeles.

Al Green became greatly successful in the early and mid 1970s and remains best known for songs such as “Let’s Stay Together,” “Tired of Being Alone” and “Love and Happiness.”

Next month, the 62-year-old will receive the 2008 lifetime achievement award at the BET Awards.

Another legend of the music industry, famed producer Quincy Jones, will receive an award for his humanitarian work. Past winners of the award include Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Denzel & Pauletta Washington, and Don Cheadle, last year’s honoree.

Green is set to begin collaboration this month with The Roots musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson on his new R&B album, “Lay It Down.” Green’s last album, “Everything’s OK,” was released in 2005.

Green also embarks on a North American tour later this month, with concert dates in California, Ontario, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, New Jersey and more.

As to the younger generation, this year it’s rapper T-Pain that leads the pack. The 22-year-old has garnered five nominations, all for collaborations with other others.

“T-Pain is everywhere,” BET executive vice president Stephen Hill told the Associated Press. “He’s got five nominations, none of them for his own work.”

Kanye West and Keyshia Cole both received three nominations, and Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and newcomer Flo Rida follow with two nominations each.

Chris Brown’s “Kiss Kiss,” Flo Rida’s “Low” and Kanye West’s “Good Life” all feature T-Pain. T-pain’s other two nominations are for the viewers choice prize for his track with Brown, and video of the year for West’s “Good Life.”

Nelly is expected to perform at the awards, as well as Lil Wayne, Blige and Mariah Carey. Carey has been nominated in the best female R&B category.
