Akon Pleads Guilty to Throwing Fan off Stage

Hip-hop and R&B performer Akon pleaded guilty on Wednesday (December 17) to a harassment charge stemming from an incident during a past-year concert. Akon ended up in court after he threw off stage Anthony Smith, who is now 16. The incident happened at a June 2007 concert at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.

Akon, who was seated four rows behind the aggressed fan and his family, was confronted by
Smith Sr. after the case was settled. The teen reportedly walked to the singer, shook his hand and said “Thanks a lot.” After that, the boy’s father also passed by Akon while he was apologizing to the boy and told him: "You threw my son off the stage."

With a smile on his face, Akon replied to the teenager: “We never had the chance to talk.”

The incident was video recorded and another fan claimed she suffered a concussion when Smith was thrown off stage by Akon and landed on her.

The Dakar, Senegal-born 35-year-old singer and songwriter won’t spend any time in jail, but he will have to perform 65 hours of community service and pay a $250 fine in exchange, according to the terms of the plea bargain. The singer initially pleaded not guilty.

Akon, real name Aliaune Thiam, agreed to plead guilty to second-degree harassment, which is a violation, instead of facing the more serious charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
The video caught on tape by fans attending the concert clearly shows Akon picking up the teen fan and tossing him off the stage during the performance during the annual KFEST summer concert.

Akon, who made his firs big step into the music industry in 2004 with the release of his single "Locked Up" from his debut album Trouble, will have to perform 65 hours of anti-gang and anti-violence community service and he must do it all until June 2009. He will have to be careful not to be arrested again in the next 12 month or he will have to reaper in front of the Fishkill court.

Akon’s attorney, Andrea Zellan, released a prepared statement to the media after her client left the court. Akon refused to talk to reporters.

Akon is a Grammy Award winner with his second album’s single “Smack That.” The singer founded of Konvict Muzik and Kon Live Distribution and is also the first artist ever to hold the number one and two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts twice.

For those of you curious to know more about Akon, his given name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Bongo Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam.
