Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad lashed out once more at the United States for its plans to build a missile defence system in Europe, the Iranian leader saying it represents a threat for most Asian nations.
Washington said the system is aimed at preventing an eventual long-range missile attack coming from countries allegedly possessing nuclear weapons, like Iran. Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad believes that not only his country is threatened and many other nations in Asia can become potential targets.
”Unfortunately some countries have become accustomed to speak from a position of force and threat,” Ahmadinejad said Thursday at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek.
Iran has been often criticized for not permitting inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to visit its nuclear facilities, the UN Security Council imposing several sanctions on the Middle Eastern country for its refusal to cooperate with the nuclear watchdog.
The international community accused Tehran of building nuclear weapons under the umbrella of nuclear proliferation for energetic purposes and diplomatically isolated Iran despite Ahmadinejad's denyal.
Regarding the US missile shield, Russia also expressed its concern that Washington is actually trying to install a military base on European soil in order to closely monitor activities of other states.
Moscow officials said the system represents a threat for Russia’s national security and didn’t rule out military actions against countries accepting to host American troops (Poland and the Czech Republic).
Ahmadinejad is attending the SCO summit as an observer, hoping to become a member of the intergovernmental organization grouping China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
