One day before the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board meeting takes place in Vienna, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country’s “nuclear dossier is closed” and expects members of the European Union to adopt a “correct approach.”
“As far as we are concerned, the Iranian nuclear dossier is closed and the IAEA has once again confirmed that there is no deviation in Iran's nuclear programmes,” the Iranian leader was quoted as saying by the IRNA news agency.
“We therefore believe that the Europeans will adopt a correct approach as there are only two countries which have not yet understood the realities and try to use the IAEA as a political tool,” Ahmadinejad said, making a clear reference to the United States and France.
Ahmadinejad said Iran remains committed to “dialogue and logic,” but warned the country’s “enemies” that the “Iranian nation will never ever retreat” from pursuing its nuclear goals.
Mohammad-Ali Hosseini, a spokesman for the foreign ministry said IAEA board members should embrace a “more realistic approach” regarding Iran’s nuclear program that sparked so much controversy, adding “technical issues shouldn’t be turned into political ones.”
Hosseini outlined once more that Iran is not willing to end its uranium enrichment program regardless of the UN Security Council’s demands.
“We hope that the IAEA board's decision will take distance from hostile and illogical positions taken by certain countries,” Hosseini continued in the same line drawn by President Ahmadinejad.
Tehran and IAEA officials reached a consensus in August on a plan which would allow the UN nuclear watchdog to complete its report over the past and present activities undertaken at nuclear facilities across Iran.
This plan represents the framework for future talks between Iranian diplomats and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, which are aimed at clearing remaining political aspects of the dispute.
