Agreement on Stimulus Bill Reached

An agreement between the House and Congress on the stimulus package to stimulate the American economy was reached yesterday. Negotiators agreed on a $789 billion package of tax cuts and spending programs.

It’s a big victory for President Obama, but not as he wanted it. The president wanted a broad bipartisan support for the economic stimulus package initiative but the differences between Democrats and Republicans on issues like the size of the stimulus and its scope got in the way.

"The difference between the Senate and House versions we've resolved," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) told reporters after weeks of debate and negotiations in Washington.

The bill passed in the Senate and the House, but there were two different versions. The bill in the Senate was of $838 billion, while the one in the House totaled $819 billion.

However, with the total sum of the stimulus package agreed upon, most analysts now wonder whether it will be the first step for a more ambitious agenda from the Obama administration.

According to Mr. Reid, this stimulus bill will create or save 3.5 million jobs and will cut taxes for 95 percent of American workers, one of Obama’s main campaign promises. However, not every detail of the bill was resolved by House and Senate leaders. One of the issues still not solved is the school-construction funding, which accounts for an important part of the stimulus package. The final conference committee meeting to work through the differences of that issue was delayed.
