'Tropic Thunder' was launched last night in Los Angeles and a few people came to boycott the film following what several advocacy groups have said. While some people consider the latest Ben Stiller movie to be quite funny, even more people have felt offended by it. And to be honest, it isn't hard at all to feel offended by 'Tropic Thunder.'
The movie picks on almost every category of people and does so in quite an aggressive way. But the main thing that determined the people to come and boycott its release was the fact that the word 'retard' is used very often. According to the Hollywood Insider, people from advocacy groups such as Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities sported banners reading “Tropic Thunder, Colossal Blunder,” “'R' word is hate speech” and “We have abilities, not disabilities.”
However, if you look closer at the movie, you'll find that the only thing that the movie is really trying to make fun of is the way things go in the movie business. Even the episode that raised complaints from people with developmental disabilities was just a satire at how many actors play mentally disabled characters in their attempts to get an Academy Award.
It's true, the movie could have done without all the politically incorrect jokes and trivial language, but it still has some parts where the humor is quite intelligent. Maybe this is the contribution that Ethan Cohen has brought to the movie, but whether this is true or not isn't important. What's without doubt is that if you feel that you can take a little bit of a politically incorrect humor, then you should go watch it.
