Adult Obesity Reaches Alarming Rates

A survey published in the report entitled “F As In Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America 2008” discovered that obesity rates have increased over the last year. The finding is a very disturbing one, taking into consideration the money that the government spends each year in trying to bring these rates down.

It looks that that the number of obese people has grown in all states except for the District of Columbia, where it was down with as little as 0.1 percent. The most affected region is the South, where most of the states in the top of the obesity rates list are.

According to the survey, the state with the lowest rate of obese people is Colorado, where only 18.4 people can be included in the category. On top of the list is Mississippi, where 31.7 people can be considered obese. This means that almost one in three persons living in this state has a body mass index (BMI) above 30.

The survey discovered that most of the obese people are poor. This is mainly caused by the high prices that healthy food has, which make poor people turn to junk food.

Some other disturbing findings of the survey are that almost two thirds of the Americans can be considered overweight or obese and that one in three persons living in the United States has hypertension. The condition is often associated with weight problems.

The figures are really alarming. If back in 1991 there wasn't any state where obesity reached a 20 percent rate, now only Colorado has a obesity rate below that figure.
