Shelley Malil, the American actor famous for his comedic
role in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin," pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one
count of attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his former girlfriend in a brutal attack.
According to the Associated Press, 43-year-old Malil was taken into custody Monday at an Amtrak station in San Diego after getting out of a train from LA, Lt. Phil Brust of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department stated.
The authorities said the Hollywood actor went to the beach city in order to encounter with his lawyer. He was convinced by him and his family members, as well as his friends to surrender to police.
Being charged with attempted murder with special circumstances of premeditation, as Deputy District Attorney Steven Carver said, Malil’s bail was set at on $2 million.
If convicted, the actor could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The victim's identity was confirmed as Kendra Beebe. She has a Facebook account in which she described herself as a 35-year-old mother of two who works as an insurance broker in Carlsbad, CA.
In line with San Diego Sheriff's Department, the woman was in critical condition on Monday. On Tuesday, Jan Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the local FBI office, said she had no update on the condition of the victim, who has stabbed at least 20 times.
