Famous actor, playwright and director of both stage and screen, Sam Shepard, was pulled over by police in Normal, Illinois at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and was charged with DUI and speeding.

According to police Lt. Mark Kotte, Shepard joined the growing list of celebrity DUIs when he failed a sobriety test after he was stopped for driving 46 mph in a residential zone with a posted speed limit of 30 mph.

He was heading north in the 700 block of North Main Street, traveling from Minnesota towards his home in Kentucky. The 65-year-old told police he made a stop at a downtown Bloomington tavern.

"The way he pulled up on the curb, it appeared he was driving under the influence," Kotte said. A breath test indicated Shepard's blood-alcohol level was double the legal limit. Shepard was taken to the McLean County Jail where he posted a $300 bond.

Shepard, who won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for drama for his play "Buried Child," was arrested on preliminary charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding 15-20 mph above the limit and improper lane usage. It is unclear when he must report back in court.

Known mainly for winning a Pulitzer Prize, Shepard also appeared in multiple films such as "Black Hawk Down," "The Assassination of Jesse James" and "The Notebook." The actor, who lives with longtime partner, actress Jessica Lange, with whom he has two children, was also nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "The Right Stuff."
