Actor Ryan O'Neal, best known as the star of the 1970 film "Love Story," pleaded guilty on Friday in a Malibu, California courtroom to the charge of possessing methamphetamines and was sentenced to spend 18 months in a drug rehabilitation program. He is also forbidden to possess any controlled substance or associate with any known drug users.
Jane Robison, Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokeswoman, said that if the defendant does not follow the program or tests positive for drug use, a judge will determine further penalties against him. On the other hand, if the "Love Story" star completes the treatment program, the charge against him will be dropped as part of a plea bargain.
The 67-year-old actor was arrested on the 17th of last September together with his 23-year-old son, Redmond, son of Farah Fawcett too, after police found methamphetamine in both of their bedrooms from their Malibu home during a probation sweep due to Redmond O'Neal’s guilty plea back in June 2008 for drug possession and misdemeanor driving under the influence. The young man’s case was continued until the 20th of February.
As ironic as it may seem, it looks like the whole O’Neal family is in trouble with the law because of the drugs. Apparently around the same time Ryan and Redmond O’Neal were being charged with methamphetamine possession, the actor’s eldest daughter Tatum was also being arrested for the same reason in New York. She was sentenced to two half-day sessions in drug treatment and fined $95 for a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. It is a well known fact that Tatum has had a long and challenging struggle with drugs but despite all that, she won an Academy Award for starring alongside her father in the 1973 film "Paper Moon."
Ryan O'Neal’s contact with fame took place on the 1960s prime-time soap opera "Peyton Place" and was also nominated for an Oscar for his part in "Love Story," a movie also starring Ali MacGraw.
