Actor and philanthropist Paul Newman passed away Friday, at the age of 83. After having struggled with cancer, he breathed his last breath at his farmhouse near Westport, Connecticut, leaving behind a whole nation mourning for him.

At the time of his death, his family members and closest friends were beside him.

“One of the great 20th century lives,” as Oscar-winning British director Sam Mendes called him, was married twice: first, with Jackie Witte, and then with actress Joanne Woodward. From the first marriage Newman had a son a two daughters, and from the second one – three daughters.  

Over more than half a century, Newman acted in more than 65 movies and achieved great success thanks to his attractiveness, easy charm, and of course, thanks to his talent. “In all cases the common feature was his easy smile, his unshakeable determination and his unaffected and sincere concern for others. He was one of nature’s gentlemen,” said British actor Kenneth Branagh.

Newman made his Hollywood debut in the 1954 historical epic film "The Silver Chalice." But he gained fame about 18 months later in “Somebody Up There likes Me,” a drama film based on the life of one of the greatest knockout artists in boxing history, Rocky Graziano.

The Hollywood legend was awarded on various occasions for his work. He won two Golden Globe Awards, an Academy Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
