In a tragic turn of evens, French actor Guillaume Depardieu, the son of famous iconic actor Gerard Depardieu and actress Elisabeth Depardieu, passed away on Monday at the age of 37.
According to hospital officials in Paris, the actor, who was hospitalized Sunday night, died from complications linked to a sudden case of pneumonia.
Guillaume Depardieu, who had been filming the movie "L'Enfance d'Icare" in Romania on the weekend, suddenly fell ill, his father's publicist said in a statement.
"He caught a virus which gave him a very severe pneumonia. Gerard is devastated," the statement read.
In spite of his famous father, the actor was well known in his own right after starring in a number of films including the movie adaptation of Les Miserables in 2001. He also starred alongside his father in director Alain Corneau's "Tous les matins du monde" (All the world's mornings) in 1991.
In the movie, father and son play the same character. On the set, the elder Depardieu went out of his way not to be the doting Dad. ''And yet he was very happy I was there,'' Guillaume, who often accused his father of neglecting him while he was younger, said in an interview. ''He watched me like a father whose son is first walking.''
However, things turned really cold between them in 2003 when Guillaume was found guilty of threatening a man with a gun.
Winner of the 1996 most promising young actor prize at the Cesar Awards — France's equivalent of the Academy Awards — for his role in the film "Les Apprentis" (The Apprentices), the star of Bertrand Bonello's "De la guerre" (Of war) and "Versailles" currently showing in cinemas, was also known for his rebellious streak.
In 2003, Guillaume Depardieu had his right leg amputated to end years of pain from a bacterial infection following a motorcycle accident in 1996. Earlier this year, he was found guilty of drunk driving and jailed for two months.
Guillaume Depardieu is survived by his father; his mother, Elisabeth; sister Julie; half-sister, Roxane; and seven-year-old daughter, Louise.
