The body of Sergio Gomez, lead singer of the well-known Mexican band K-Paz de la Sierra, was recovered Monday by authorities who said the man had been abducted, tortured and strangled to death.
Sergio Gomez was seized after a concert in the western Mexican state of Michoacan in the early hours of Sunday. He was traveling in a car with several others, according to Reuters two music promoters, after his band’s concert in Morelia, Michoacan's capital, when they were kidnapped by armed men.
The other men were released Monday. Gomez’s his body was found the following day, bearing signs of burns and bruises, police said. According to the Los Angeles Times, the singer had received threatening phone calls, urging him not to appear at the concert. Gomez performed, but redoubled his security.
A day before Gomez’s kidnap and murder, another singer, Zayda Pena, was killed in her hospital bed, as she was recovering from an assault.
Pena, 28, was in a hospital in the border city of Matamoros, where she was being treated for a gunshot wound she suffered Friday night in a Matamoros hotel. She had been attacked along with two other people, a friend and the hotel manager; both died at the scene.
She was shot to death Saturday. The reason for her murder is also unknown. She was the lead singer of grupera group Zayda y Los Culpables (Zayda and the Guilty Ones).
There is some speculation that these two deaths and the death of several other musicians over the year are related to organized crime and drug trafficking. While some groups in the grupera genre sing songs about drug trafficking, both Gomez and Pena were better known for their romantic ballads, notes the BBC.
Gomez’s family had reportedly received no ransom demands, reports the Times. Kidnappings in influential political, business and cultural families are frequent in Mexico.
Less than a year ago, in December 2006, Javier Morales Gomez of the band Los Implacables del Norte was shot to death in a Michoacan park. In February, four members of the musical group Banda Fugaz were shot to death after they performed in Michoacan.
