The bronze statue of Arthur Fonzarelli, the character played by Henry Winkler in the sitcom “Happy Days,” was unveiled by the actor today on Wisconsin's Milwaukee River. The unveiling of the bronze Fonz commemorates the very popular sitcom which ran for a decade (1974–1984) and especially the iconic character.
The bronze statue was unveiled in Milwaukee because that was the city in which the story of the sitcom was located, but was never shot. All the “Happy Days” series was shot in California.
Besides Winkler, the sitcom’s director and producer Garry Marshall, stars Anson Williams (Potsie), Don Most (Ralph), Marion Ross (Mrs. Cunningham), Tom Bosley (Mr. Cunningham) and Erin Moran (Joanie) attended the unveiling ceremony. Ron Howard, who played Richie Cunningham, did not attend the ceremony.
"I hope that this statue really represents in the way that this city deserves," said Winkler giving his approval of the statue unveiling Fonzie style - two thumbs up and “Aaaay!” He then praised the city of Milwaukee for its theaters, good food and, from now on, the bronze Fonz.
The bronze statue of The Fonz wears a black leather jacket just like the character did in the series and is in the classic two thumbs up “Aaaay!” pose.
"To see it in real life and that it exists it's just unbelievable. It really is," said Winkler.
Arthur Fonzarelli, also dubbed The Fonz or Fonzie, was the iconic and most loved character of “Happy Days,” a sitcom with a story which evolved around the life of a middle-class family - the Cunninghams.
