A Warm Welcome For “Australia”

Although it is still unclear whether Baz Luhrmann’s new movie, “Australia,” lives up to the buzz surrounding it, it’s certain that the production knows how to gather major showbiz figures at the same place and, more importantly, at the same time.

Thus, just a couple of days prior to its United States premiere, 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the much talked about movie, organized a special screening event at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York, which was attended by the film’s stars, “People’s” sexiest man alive, Hugh Jackman, and Nicole Kidman, as well as several other big names in the movie industry.

Australia’s” helmer, Baz Luhrmann, and co-producer, Catherine Martin, were also present, alongside Nicole Kidman’s spouse, country singer Keith Urban, musician Moby and other celebrities including Kelsey Grammer, Olivia Newton-John, Deborra-Lee Furness, Alicia Witt, Helena Christensen and Lauren Bacall.

Directed by the helmer of “Moulin Rouge!,” which also starred Nicole Kidman, and “Romeo + Juliet,” “Australia” is an epic drama set in 1939, at the dawn of World War II.

It tells the story of a British aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), who takes over an extensive outback property and is lent a hand by a local, Drover (cowboy), played by Hugh Jackman. He helps her drive the cattle across the property as they find themselves menaced by the bombing of nearby Darwin.

In spite of the fact that they initially dislike each other, the two fall in love while the English lady struggles to adopt a mix-raced orphan, Nullah (Brandon Walters).
