A Second Spacewalk For ISS Expansion

Astronauts living the International Space Station went back outside in order to perform more repair work on a jammed joint Thursday and promised to keep a tight grip on all their tools so nothing would get away this time. A $100,000 tool bag was lost during an excursion two days ago.

Stefanyshyn-Piper's tool bag slipped away Tuesday after one of the grease guns inside exploded and got bits of the dark gray stuff everywhere. She later owned up to making a mistake by not checking to make sure the bag was secured. This is mishap she described as "very disheartening". She added: "There's still the psychological thing of knowing that we made a mistake and having to live through that. It was hardest coming back in and having to face everybody else."

This time before floating out, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Shane Kimbrough double- and triple-checked their equipment to make certain everything was tied down because only two grease guns remained for all the repair work. Therefore the two astronauts had to share the remaining grease guns and other tools today.

The spacewalk was the second of four planned for shuttle Endeavour's visit. The shuttle and seven astronauts arrived at the space station on Sunday to deliver equipment needed to double the size of the live-aboard crew to six. The new station items include a new toilet and a machine that turns urine and sweat into drinkable water. Endeavour also delivered an exercise machine, kitchenette and two sleeping compartments.

Today’s walk also fell on the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first space station piece. The spacewalkers' primary job 220 miles up was to clean and lubricate the massive joint that controls the solar wings on the right side of the space station, and to replace its bearings. Their second job includes "the relocation of two crew and equipment translation aid carts, the lubrication of the Canadarm2 end effector, and the continuation of cleaning and lubrication of the starboard solar alpha rotary joint".

“Spacewalkers have accidentally lost tools in the past,” including a putty knife, said Bill Jeffs, a spokesman at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “We’ve taken steps to ensure today’s tasks go smoothly.” A single tool bag will be tethered to an astronaut or the station at all times. And grease guns, which leaked inside the satchel two days ago, will be tied to the outside of the tote, Jeffs said.

Moreover astronauts on the International Space Station will install a gadget called the “ENose” next month, according to Computerworld. The ingenious device will be unpacked and installed on the space station on December 9. Its job is to watch out for dangerous chemicals like ammonia, mercury, methanol and formaldehyde that could escape into the air in the space station. "This ENose is a very capable instrument that will increase crew awareness of the state of their air quality," said Carl Walz, a former astronaut and director of NASA's Advanced Capabilities Division, which funds ENose development. NASA also noted that there have been past air quality problems in the space station.
