Alex Rodriguez ended his collaboration with the New York Yankees. A-Rod opted out of his a $252 million contract due to uncertainty over key members of staff, so the third baseman won’t play for the Yankees in the next season.
A-Rod will forfeit $81 million of the contract, but money is not a current concern for Rodriquez. The Dominican American baseball infielder will most likely make hundreds of millions after he signs with one of the clubs that showed their interest in acquiring his services. Some of his most probable destinations are the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox which recently won the World Series after sweeping the Colorado Rockies.
According to Rodriguez’s agent Scott Boras, the main reason that led to his departure from the Bronx ball club was the fact that the Yankees don’t have a manager to replace the departed Joe Torre. The uncertainty whether future Hall of Famers Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte would come back to the Yankees next season was another factor took in consideration by Alex Rodriquez when deciding upon his departure.
"Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer, his catcher and one of his statured pitchers were going to do," Boras told the Associated Press.
"He really didn't want to make any decisions until he knew what they were doing," he added.
Rodriquez was in great shape last year as he hit 54 home runs, 156 RBIs and ran in 132 runs with a batting average of .314. Nevertheless, his playoffs performance was very poor as he went 4-15 with six strikeouts.
Evidently, the New York Yankees may be very upset with A-Rod leaving, but the money left over by his opting out gives them the possibility to sign Posada and Rivera and also go after major free agent pitcher Johan Santana.
