The legendary Swedish director
Ingmar Bergman has just passed away. The news has saddened not only his beloved
Swedish public, but the people from the whole world that have been aware of the
filmmaker’s important contribution to the modern cinema. Ingmar Bergman has
been considered one of the main masters of the modern cinema, along with other
great filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard, Roberto Rossellini, Luis Bunuel,
Martin Scorsese, Orson Welles, Robert Bresson, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley
Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Roman Polanski and several
other important directors of this 20th century.
Ingmar Bergman has recently
celebrated his 89th birth day, as he was born on the 14th
of July 1918, in Sweden’s
fourth largest city, Uppsala.
Through the more than 50 film that Ingmar Bergman has created in his entire
career, the directorial vision has focused on the extremes of Sweden, which the filmmaker has
loved very much. Bergman has also approached man’s existential problems,
examining through his film the man’s relationship to himself, to God and also
the others.
Ingmar Bergman together with
several other European filmmakers has introduced the innovative idea of the
“total filmmaker”, which is both the writer and the director of an idea,
transforming it into a masterpiece film. The Swedish legendary director has
managed to use the modern medium of cinematography to express himself in a
similar way to the artists’ once way of writing novels, musical masterpieces
and so on.
Bergman’s works could have been
compared to conglomerates of essential dense and profound thoughts and
feelings.
The filmmaker
has started his career in the 40s and has reached fame in the 50s and 60s. His
latest works have been “Saraband” in 2003 and “Bergmanova Sonata” in 2005.
Other important titles include the film trilogy “Through a Glass Darkly”,
“Winter Light”, “The Silence” and others.
The legendary
filmmaker has passed away at his home from Faro, Sweden,
from a peaceful death. His funeral is to be attended by close friends and
family. May he rest in peace!
