RealNetworks announced the upcoming release of its new DVD
ripping software called RealDVD. The idea behind it is to provide users with
the means to make backup copies for their personal use and it will allow them
to make digital copies of an entire DVD, with all the extras included.
Robert Glaser, chief executive of RealNetworks, called it “a
compelling and very responsible product that gives consumers a way to do
something they have always wanted to do.” He also added that during the
development process they searched for several barriers meant to protect the
interests of the rights holders and the results and functionality of the
program should please them.
The new software will cost $30 and the price might lead to a
slower adoption than expected. Some might even say that it is useless, as DVD
ripping has been around for quite some time now and widely accessible. Still,
this software is legal and will ensure that its users will not encounter any
problems with the authorities because of the movies on their computers. RealDVD
will allow users to transfer the ripped content to four other PCs.
It could indeed prove
to be a good asset for some but the negative feedback has already hit the Web
pages. Many believe that the money spent on the DVD should be enough for any
sort of action related to that certain DVD and do not see the point, or better
said, the justice, in paying to use an already paid product.
