According to doctors at Saint Luke's Hospital, a baby born in San Francisco has six perfectly formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet. The remarkable thing is not that he was born with the 24 digits, but the fact that all 12 fingers are fully developed and functional and that additionally all 12 toes are working as well.

Almost all previous such cases didn’t have this functionality premise. So one can’t actually say whether the boy is lucky or not. The term used to describe an occurrence such as this is polydactyly, and it isn't really uncommon for a genetic trait such as this to end up creating a couple extra fingers or toes in a family genetic line. The odd part of the whole thing is that the baby was born with full functionality, and looks to be able to go through each life with extra fingers and toes.

Kamani Hubbard's extra digits look so normal they weren't noticed at first, said his mother, Miryoki Gross, of Daly City. Extra digits run in the father's side of the family, said dad Kris Hubbard, but none have been so perfectly developed.

Moreover, not even ultrasound showed the extra fingers and toes and doctors said that the case is extremely rare and that because all additional digits are fully functional, that it isn't considered a disability or deformity.

“It's merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing,” said Dr. Michael Treece. “Imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be or flamenco guitarist or typist,” he said.
