After 100 years of poodles and terriers as the Westminster
Kennel Club’s winners, a beagle named Uno belonging to Aaron Wilkerson took
this year’s first place at the world’s most famous canine show. The 132nd Westminster show took place Tuesday at Madison Square
Garden where more than
2,697 dogs gathered to battle for the glory.
Uno is a 3-year-old beagle from Illinois. The Westminster judges associated the winner with
the ancient dogs, famous for their long ears and their nose. Beagles are often
preferred by hunters. Moreover this breed is also famous from Shakespeare’s
writings that characterized them as a loyal species.
David Frei, the dog expert and announcer for USA Network’s
coverage of Westminster
said before Uno won: "If he won, it would be the greatest thing for our
show."
Moreover, John Cisto of the Bath and Biscuit Dog Spa
presumes that with their winning beagles will gain more and more popularity among
dog-lovers: "I think with the breed winning the Westminster Dog Show is
just going to increase the popularity of the breed and more people are going to
become aware of how great they are as a house dog for a family.”
Supposing that what Cisto said will turn out to be true
Uno’s handler gave some advice to those who will choose to make a beagle part
of their families "I hope you have a fenced-in yard. They like to put
their nose down and go check everything out.” However, Wilkerson didn’t forget
to praise their love and loyalty.
