The biggest diamond ever sold in an Asian auction was bought
at the price of $6 million. The identity of the buyer was not revealed. D’oh! I
wouldn’t want everybody to know either that I have spent $6 million on something colorless
and shiny.
According to CNN, the 101-carat diamond is the size of a
ping pong ball and besides being the largest and most expensive diamond ever
bought in an Asian auction, does nothing more than shine. Talk about
extravagance.
The gem was sold at Christie's auction house in Hong Kong on Wednesday. Kate Swan Malin, a Christie's
spokeswoman, said that two more diamonds of 100 carats have been sold in Europe
but this kind of acquisition was Asia’s first.
Initially, Christie's got the diamond without the tiara and,
to make it more appealing and to reveal its qualities, they decided to speak to
a designer to create a tiara for the gem.
I bet someone talks now like Sméagol referring to the
diamond as “My precious.” I also bet that it doesn’t talk back.
Asked about what someone would do with such a big and
expensive stone, Malin said that some collectors would wear it to a special
occasion.
If you ask me, I would use it a power outage. I’m sick of
flashlights.
